Scour of foundations by the action of water is a major cause of bridge collapse, and it is important to
manage the risks in an effective and consistent manner. A key part of that process is the assessment of structures to identify those that are most at risk and require further action.
This standard outlines requirements for the assessment of scour and other hydraulic actions at highway
structures crossing or adjacent to waterways. It provides processes to determine the level of risk associated with scour effects. It also includes processes to assess the robustness of structures in a flood, and references to measures for reducing risk. It supersedes BA 74/06.
